What Is Stainless Steel?

What you need to know for the right grade and surface choice — short and to the point.

Stainless steel is a steel alloy that, thanks to the chromium (Cr) in its composition, forms a thin, invisible chromium oxide layer on its surface. Even if this layer is scratched or worn away, it repairs itself on contact with oxygen — this is the real mechanism that makes stainless steel "stainless."

To be considered standard stainless steel, the alloy must contain at least 10.5% chromium; in 300 series (austenitic) grades, this ratio is typically 16-26%, combined with nickel.

Surface Types

2B

Matte, Standard

Cold-rolled, slightly reflective matte finish — also known in the market as "cold finish." The most common and economical standard.

No.1

Hot-Rolled

Known in the market as "hot finish." A matte, rough natural surface formed after hot rolling, typically seen on thicker plates.

2R / BA

Bright Annealed

A mirror-like bright surface (Bright Annealed). Preferred for decorative applications and those requiring hygiene.

No.4

Satin / Brushed

A unidirectionally brushed, semi-matte texture. Common in kitchen equipment and architectural applications.

No.8

Mirror

The highest gloss level, a mirror-polished surface. For decorative and reflective applications.

General Classification

Grade Families

300 SERIES

Austenitic

The most common family — contains chromium + nickel, non-magnetic, high corrosion resistance.

304 · 316L · 310S
400 SERIES

Ferritic

Nickel-free, more economical, slightly magnetic. Decorative and general-purpose use.

430 · 409
400 SERIES

Martensitic

Hardenable structure, magnetic. Cutting-tool and mechanical part applications.

420
DUPLEX

Austenitic-Ferritic

A mix of both structures — high strength and superior resistance to chloride/pitting corrosion.
